| Davina's work centers around sixteenth century feudal Japan, from
woodblock prints by the great Japanese masters to painting, mythology and
history, as well as Japanese cinema. Her paintings take elements from this
tradition and give them a contemporary twist. The raditional bold lines,
strong patterns and stylised forms are scaled up and rendered in a more
contemporary palette, giving the life-size paintings a distinctly modern
impact. Davina's repertoire includes warriors, battle scenes, gods, demons
and beautiful ladies. Her technique involves building up many thin layers of
acrylic paint to give a flat print-like quality to the work. |
