My ceramic animal sculptures are all individually hand sculpted, giving each one a unique character. They are made using a mixed media approach to ceramics which is not commonly used. I sculpt the rough form of the animal in wire, and then use this as an armature. I cover the armature in a layer of scrim soaked in a slurry of paper clay. The paper fibres are added to the clay to reduce the shrinkage, allowing the wire armature to remain within the sculpture. They are then fired in the kiln and glazed in traditional methods.
My interest in the animal form began when I was studying ceramics at Seaford College eight years ago, since then I have completed a bachelor of arts in ceramics at Loughborough University. After graduating in 2008 I set up my own studio and began full time, making for exhibitions, galleries and commissions and also running courses teaching ceramics to adults. |
