Laura Quiggan studied at the West Sussex College of Art and Design for four years, before earning her living as an Editor/Designer. She worked for years on newspaper and magazine titles in Sussex and London, but during 2010 decided to give up the rat race to concentrate on painting full-time.

Laura’s paintings are bold, colourful and often quirky, featuring rural livestock and seaside themes that surround her home, nearby the foot of the South Downs. She paints in oil or acrylic on canvas, but insists acrylic is by far her favourite medium. The combination of canvas and acrylic is perfect to brighten any conservatory with colourful beach huts or to put a bit of personality into a pig portrait or two.

“Painting on canvas allows me to be quirky and vibrant and what’s more, canvases don’t always have to be framed, which makes most of my paintings ‘affordable art’ for anyone wanting something a bit different,” said Laura.

As a member of three local art societies with regular exhibitions held throughout the year, Laura is always working a new painting to exhibit at the shows.  She exhibits at The Arundel Gallery Trail with the Downland Art Society and considers the event to be one of the highlights of her calendar. Laura also exhibits independently at agricultural or lifestyle shows in the South and is happy to take on commissions.

Based in the picturesque village of Walberton, near Arundel, West Sussex, Downland Art Society is an open and friendly Art Society. We may have been founded in 1944, but we are far from old fashioned. With monthly meetings, regular workshops and two successful exhibitions a year, there’s always something going on

If you love great art, make sure you visit the Downland Art Society Summer Exhibition; a popular and varied exhibition taking place as part of this year's Arundel Gallery Trail. What a great way to enjoy the summer and spend the last Bank Holiday of the year. With unframed pictures, framed paintings and canvases in a variety of sizes and mediums; watercolour, oils, acrylics, pastel and mixed media - there is something for every taste and budget.

The Society's exhibitions have become a regular haunt for art buyers and around 150 paintings are purchased every year.  As paintings are purchased and taken away they are replaced with new ones, providing even more choice, so get down to the show early and don't forget to revisit later in the exhibition's run.  See if you can spot which artist has won the annual 'Best in Show' award, or received a 'Highly Commended' certificate and enjoy the artist biographies. Members stewarding the exhibition are on hand and happy to help any visitors who have questions or want advice.
