My working process begins with an observation of form and colour, usually taken from our natural surroundings.  Whatever the point of inspiration, I usually see it in my imagination as the basis of a pattern.

My canvas is anodized aluminium sheet, which has a micro-porous surface. Using a palette of proprietary inks and dyes, formulated for use with the aluminium, I experiment with a variety of printing methods, from naïve block prints, etched and cut lino prints, and sharp digitally imaged screen prints. Whilst it is satisfying to produce a good 2d surface, I keep in mind how it will look when formed into a 3d piece – as you would when designing for textiles.

I am drawn to textile surfaces and textures for inspiration, and enjoy the challenge of momentarily deceiving the eye into wondering if the material is cold, hard metal, or soft pliable textile transformed into an unyielding shape.

The art of the jeweller is essentially decorative, despite the diverse symbolism invested in it.  I strive to make my work recognisably individual and handcrafted. The distillation of inspiration through design processes, to fabrication, results in a piece of wearable art — something to should elevate the spirit when worn!
