Robert is a figure painter who is inspired by bodies in space, their relations to it and to one another providing a language to explore a diverse range of experience and viewpoints. He aims to make tender, sensuous and at times provocative paintings, rich in metaphor, symbolism and layered meanings with heightened emotional depth.
His paintings stress the expression of emotions, such as alienation, anguish, vulnerability, melancholy, isolation and separation, yet tenderness, hope and humour can co-exist with violence in his work; as a figurative painter he is less interested in how people move and more in what moves them.
There is a strong sense of narrative and performance that runs though the work telling the viewer a multiple layered story that is incomplete without input from their own life experience. Influences include contemporary film, dance and theatre, in particular the filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman, the films by Peter Greenaway and the choreography of DV8 and the late Pina Bausch.
His work is shown throughout the United Kingdom, selling to private collectors in both Europe and America.
In 2009 he completed a Post Graduate Diploma at West Dean College and has just started his Masters Degree at Chichester University.
