EGO ALTER is an exhibition between two artists who at first glance work in very different ways, there is a strong link however underpinning both their practices and Square1 Art has brought these two artists together to explore and create a dialogue between
themselves and their work.
STIG EVANS is a painter and paintings conservator. His work as a
restorer informs his artistic practice. He is particularly fascinated
by colour, how we perceive it, respond to it, and represent it, and
by its historical, chemical and physical provenance. He uses colour
as a vehicle to explore authenticity, often taking the visual perception of other paintings and their materials as the starting point for his own paintings. He works in series. Each series looks at an aspect of how paintings are perceived and how they are changed by time, environment, context and intervention.
SIMON HITCHENS ‘Stone is the material backbone to my creative explorations and conceptual focus in my sculptures. By isolating a section of the physical world, rock, and presenting that with its alter ego, a cast of the rock or the co-joining but missing area, in clear resin, the sculptures acknowledge beauty, the natural world and
our position within it. Over the years my physical intervention with stone has become increasingly minimal and I wish for the work to sit in contemplative silence, where they are not about beginning or ending. Indeed, the work is about presence and absence, and typically the sculptures consist of two halves or elements. These ‘bodies’ share the potential to create a perfect unity, the possibility of a
relationship that was once intimate and that could, perhaps, be so again. These are abstract sculptures which constantly refer to how we understand our position within the world, as well as operating on a more formal level as art works.’
