Born in Liverpool in 1920, the son of an Austrian immigrant, Yankel Feather had his first one-man exhibition at Gibbs Gallery, Manchester in 1940. He studied Art at Woolwich Polytechnic (1937-39) with Heber Matthews. Yankel moved to St Ives in 1977 having visited briefly in the 50' s, it was here he first met and sat for Terry Frost.
The subject in many works are boats, figures and seascapes, from his time in St Ives. Boats are presented as if washed up on the beach, next to one another, as if staying close for comfort after a storm. The absence of people is a stark contrast to his city/town scenes, which are bursting with activity.
Yankel is a difficult artist to classify: In his long career to date he has painted still life (vases of flowers), nudes, landscapes, figures and abstracts. In many instances he draws his inpiration from the Cornish Coastline, or the Brighton Seafront (his last home) and adds to what he sees a unique personal style and use of colour.
Yankel Feather had consistently exhibited in London, Manchester and Liverpool, and his work is in many private collections including that of Ringo Starr, David Bowie and the late Terry Frost.
Yankel Feather died in 2009. We had two great shows with him, in 2004 and 2005, and it was a privllege to have met and worked with an artist of his calibre and experience.
In 2010 two of his paintings were acquired by the National Museums of Liverpool.
During the Arundel Festival in 2011 we are pleased to be showing a selection of his drawings and one or two paintings.
