For the Arundel Gallery Trail exhibition, I will be exhibiting a series of smaller paintings derived from my large-scale installation pieces. These works capture moments from my three-dimensional installations, reinterpreted as collages on a smaller scale.
My process is ritualistic, performative, and labor-intensive. It begins with tearing unprimed canvas to a predetermined size and laying it on the floor. I mix reactive pigments into water and paint directly onto the raw surface, allowing colors to pool, soak through, and stain each fiber in a dynamic balance of control and spontaneity. The canvas is then folded, shaped, and left to dry into self-supporting structures. Sometimes, it is compressed between wooden planks and driven over to extract excess water and embed lasting creases, inviting elements of chance. Once dry, the forms are flattened, ironed, and layered with further color and process, revealing traces of their transformation.
For this exhibition, I seek to translate the physicality and depth of my installations into smaller compositions. These pieces retain the layered history and geometric forms of the originals, offering glimpses into the evolving nature of my practice. By distilling my process into a single image, I aim to capture the essence of my larger works while creating new, self-contained pieces.
If space allows, I will also include some larger works.
