Born and raised in Austria at her mother’s pottery business, Katharina experimented with clay from young age. Her fascination with clay led to years of study in Austria and, later, Germany. In 2011 Katharina set up a studio in Cambridge where she produces award-winning porcelain vessels inspired by the elemental colour and shape of ancient Korean pottery.
"My love of lines manifests clearly in my work," says Katharina, "and I continually find new aspects to explore. The inspiration from my surface patterns comes from the charcoal and crayon drawings I enjoyed making as a child. I always preferred these materials to pens or pencils; the lines they produce are thicker, rougher and less controlled. I try to achieve a similar look on ceramics by using a wax-resistant technique. My lines show the process of drawing, which I believe gives my pieces life. The strong red glaze formulate I use is inspired by a lacquered box that was given to my family by a Japanese friend. The contrast between the brightly coloured interior and the dark matte exterior stuck in my mind. I later translated it into porcelain. Strong contrasts are what drive the aesthetic of my work.’’
