Debra studied at Bournemouth College of Art and Design and completed her degree course at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design. In the early stages of her career, Debra concentrated on photography, then later combined her two disciplines of art and photography. The resulting collages were showcased in a one-woman exhibition in the oil town of Stavanger, and were also exhibited in Oslo alongside other expatriates’ work.
After returning to the UK, Debra began to concentrate on her portraiture and figure work. She now works from her studio in Salisbury.
Debra works in situ, from either a landscape or a model, seeking a direct interaction with her subject. Through a process of sketching and quick expressive marks, she seeks the extraordinary in the ordinary. An often humbling act, she searches to capture a line, a form, a colour, a composition, stripped of unnecessary detail – extracting this forms the basis of her work.
Charcoal, acrylic paint and collage are central to Debra's unique technique. Collage used in block form is assembled as shadow to describe the form and emphasize the drawn line, resulting in Debra’s captivating paintings and prints.
