Venue 20

Venue address: Duff House, 13 Maltravers Street. BN18 9AP

Derek Davis (1926- 2008) Founder member of the Arundel Gallery Trail.

In 1957 Derek and his wife Ruth, moved to Duff House, Arundel, where he worked from his studio for over six decades. This year we are celebrating his centenary in a wonderful retrospective show.

Derek studied painting at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the late 1940s. From 1953 to 1994, he worked as a potter, selling at Heals, Primavera, Bluecoat Centre, Crafts Council, CPA and Liberties and showing in exhibitions internationally. He represented British Ceramics at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s “Spirit of the 70s” and was an Honourable member of the International Academy of Ceramics.

Early work was patterned, but once he had built a stoneware kiln in the garden, he explored glazes, becoming world famous for his Sang De Boeuf, and later his Copper Barium. In the 80s, he started decorating his forms with figurative themes. Lovers, Peccadillos, and Social comment, all with a wonderful sense of wit. 1994 saw Derek return to his first passion, painting, which he continued until his death in 2008.

This exhibition includes work from every period of his career, and is a beautiful and fitting homage to him.
