Hettie Pittman is a Sussex based artist painting primarily from her studio in West Sussex, making marks with a palette knife, newspapers, rags and sometimes a brush. Always aspiring to give each painting a sense of space and to convey an energy and rawness whilst leaving room within the painting to be open to interpretation from the viewer.

 

Each artwork is built up with layers of paint applied thickly, then peeled back and scratched into with the end of a brush or palette knife.

 

The sea has a huge influence on her work, its rhythm and movement always being something she strives to capture. Each painting is a journey, an exploration of the physicality of paint and surface, a suggestion rather than an appearance of a particular place.
